We found Piranesi because we are in love with Rome.

Before his engravings, the rational mind grasps the contradiction of spatial premises, without their native bias. Thus, Marguerite Yourcenar’s following statement makes sense: “From multiple calculations that are know to be correct” come “proportions that are know to be wrong”.

However, spatial proportions permeate time, creating a higher meaning, which Irene Bagnara on Art Tribune defines as constellation: “Piranesi builds a reality, vision or intimate framework, in which time is not conceivable either as a progress or a repetition, but rather as a constellation, an ever-expanding elastic net[…] The awareness of time passing, both distressing and freeing, defines Piranesi's construction of architectural space”. Space becomes time and time becomes space, in overlapping dimensions, only typical of life.

But Mankind does not always have time or space for life. Going back to Marguerite Yourcenar, commenting on Piranesi’s famous Prisons, she describes the figures represented in them “in the indifference of those human ants wandering in immense spaces and in which different groups almost never seem to communicate with each other, or not even acknowledging each other’s presence”.
